Post-Race Highlights:

  • Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams made the yearly trip to the scenic Finger Lakes region of New York state for the series’ second road course event of the year on Sunday.  The 2.45-mile course NASCAR uses at Watkins Glen International is a fast course filled with several tricky segments that include left and right turns, where drivers have to run a clean race in order to stay out of harm’s way.  For Kasey Kahne and his No. 95 Procore team, they showed speed on Saturday and went on to earn a top-10 starting position for Sunday’s race.  Unfortunately, Kahne got caught up in contact only four laps into the race that damaged the front of his Procore Chevy.  Despite the body damage and loss of track position due to repairs, Kahne and the team were able to battle back to a 21st-place finish at a track where passing for position can be incredibly challenging and limited.
  • Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen took the green flag at 3:06 p.m. EST as the field launched into Turn 1 to begin the 90-lap event.  Kahne had taken over ninth on the opening lap, but during lap 4, the No. 10 car spun in Turn 7 and the Procore Chevy found itself sustaining damage to the right front of the car as the hood got crushed from contact.  The team was forced to pit under caution that followed in order to work on hammering down the hood from the damage.  The race returned to green to begin lap 6 with Kahne in 35th at the time.  Over the remainder of Stage 1, Kahne worked to drive his way up into 20th before the flags came out to end the stage.  Under the caution, Kahne was able to tell crew chief Jon Leonard that the Procore Chevy turned well to the right, was a little tight to the left, and that he didn’t think a lot of changes were necessary since the car was “pretty good there.”
  • Stage 2 took the green flag to begin lap 25 with Kahne in 29th after the team had continued to work on their damaged car.  Kahne drove his way back into 20th as he radioed in that the No. 95 machine was “too tight up the hill to the left” during the stage.  Stage 2 ended following lap 40, and once again, Kahne ended the stage in 20th.  Under the caution, Kahne and Leonard discussed the Procore Chevy’s handling as Kahne asked if there was any way the team could help to get the front of the car back down into the track again.  The damage from the early contact had lifted the front of the Procore Chevy up of the track, so the team made a four-tire stop on lap 42 for a round of adjustments.
  • Stage 3 took the green to start lap 45 as Kahne lined up in 25th.  Kahne quietly focused on the course as he once again worked to advance positions whenever possible.  A caution at lap 54 allowed the team to make another four-tire stop, along with further work on the hood, and Leonard made the call to take a splash of fuel one more time before the race returned to green in order to pack the No. 95 with fuel.  Kahne restarted in 26th and was able to improve to 21st before the checkered flag.
  • Chase Elliott drove away with his first career win in the series as he held off a charge from Martin Truex, Jr.  Truex, Jr., Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez, and Erik Jones rounded out Sunday’s top-five finishers at Watkins Glen, while Kahne was scored in 21st.
